Summary:
Peter holds the position of Group Manager – Industry Applications.
Peter graduated from Roseworthy College in 1991, with a degree in Wine Science. On graduation, Peter was awarded the Australian Institute of Food Science and Technology (Wine Group) Prize for Wine Technology<.i>; the R.H. Martin Memorial Prize for Sensory Evaluation, and; the David Bradley Memorial Prize for the graduating student whose personal qualities, enthusiasm and aptitude, indicate the promise of an outstanding contribution to the wine industry.
Peter’s practical winemaking experience is as follows:
- Five years as an Assistant Winemaker and Winery Manager for Primo Estate Wines
- One vintage for Moutadam Vineyard
- Five months at Chateau Guiraud in Sauternes (1995)
- Five months winemaking with the Vietti family in Barolo, Italy (1996)
- Two months winemaking with Antinori in Tuscany, Italy (1998)
Peter is also an owner operator of Arrivo Wine, producing small quantities of three different wines from the Nebbiolo grape variety, each of which have received considerable acclaim in the past four years. The insights gained through establishing and operating a vineyard, making the wines and managing and growing a small wine business, represent invaluable experience which can be drawn on in Peter’s role at the AWRI.
For the first six months of both 1996 and 1997, Peter lectured in wine science for six institutions in Adelaide, before joining the AWRI in July 1997 as Manager - Technical Services Group (which grew to become the Industry Development and Support Group).
The Industry Development and Support Group provide technical support to Australian winemakers, including organising the AWRI Roadshows and the conduct of the Advanced Wine Assessment Course, and the workshop programmes at Australian Wine Industry Technical Conferences. The Group’s research activities included the AWRI Closure Trial, and investigations into Dekkera Brettanomyces yeast.
On January 1st 2008 Peter became Manager of the newly-created Industry Applications Group. The purpose of Industry Applications is to actively facilitate the further development and industry uptake of outcomes of AWRI research, being the ‘D’ in the AWRI’s R,D,E&C – (Research, Development, Extension and Commercialisation) business model. The Industry Applications Group have developed a range of novel technologies based on concepts flowing from research, thereby adding extra value to the Australian wine industry’s past and current investments in R&D.
In October 2007 Peter was elected to the managing committee of the Australian Society of Viticulture and Oenology (ASVO), and held the position of Vice President until December 2009.
