Position Vacant: Laboratory Technician

The Australian Wine Research Institute (AWRI) is the Australian grape and wine industry’s own research organisation. The AWRI has strong links with the wine industry and other research organisations both nationally and internationally and provides a stimulating and challenging work environment.

Applications are invited for a full-time position of Laboratory Technician at the AWRI within the Trace Analysis Laboratory as part of AWRI Commercial Services. The ideal candidate will have a degree in science with exposure to analytical chemistry techniques or equivalent commercial laboratory experience, be an excellent communicator and will need to work well within a busy team environment. Experience in gas chromatography (GC-MS, GC/MS/MS) and liquid chromatography (LC, LC/MS/MS) is highly desirable. AWRI Commercial Services is NATA ISO17025 accredited in the field of chemical testing and the laboratory is GLP recognised. Knowledge in these areas is preferred but not essential.

The laboratory performs a large range of analyses using various chromatographic techniques and analytical capabilities. The successful candidate will perform analysis of samples by GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, HPLC and LC/MS/MS, including sample preparation, sample extraction and data analysis. Support for fermentation projects and other non-routine experiments will also be required.

The role will be suitable for a graduate (preferably with honours) or a laboratory technician with one to two years’ laboratory experience. The ideal candidate will have a laboratory background in a commercial environment. Candidates should outline their experience with the relevant equipment as well as any experience within an accredited laboratory environment in their application.
