Peter has over 25 years' experience in many facets of the Australian wine industry, and joined the AWRI in July 1997 in the role of extension manager. In that role he oversaw an expansion of the AWRI’s extension offerings to the Australian grape and wine sector, notably with roadshow seminars and workshops, the Advanced Wine Assessment Course (AWAC), and the Australian Wine Industry Technical Conference workshop programs. Peter also led the AWRI’s research projects into closures and Brettanomyces yeast, which both led to widespread practice change by the Australian wine industry. He was also instrumental in establishing and managing the AWRI's network of regional nodes, though which AWRI research was developed and applied in response to industry opportunities.
Peter graduated from Roseworthy College in 1991 with a degree in Wine Science, and on graduation, was awarded three prizes: The Australian Institute of Food Science and Technology Prize for Wine Technology; the R.H.
