Peter holds the position of Manager – Industry Engagement and Application.
The primary role of this position is to oversee the ‘Development’ component of the AWRI’s research and development capability, aiming to generate practical solutions to industry opportunities and challenges. The position works within the AWRI’s network of wine sector professionals, to ensure widespread awareness and adoption of the AWRI’s research outcomes.
Peter has over 25 years' experience in many facets of the Australian wine industry, and joined the AWRI in July 1997 in the role of extension manager. In that role he oversaw an expansion of the AWRI’s extension offerings to the Australian grape and wine sector, notably with roadshow seminars and workshops, the Advanced Wine Assessment Course (AWAC), and the Australian Wine Industry Technical Conference workshop programs. Peter also led the AWRI’s research projects into closures and Brettanomyces yeast, which both led to widespread practice change by the Australian wine industry. He was also instrumental in establishing and managing the AWRI's network of regional nodes, though which AWRI research was developed and applied in response to industry opportunities.
Peter graduated from Roseworthy College in 1991 with a degree in Wine Science, and on graduation, was awarded three prizes: The Australian Institute of Food Science and Technology Prize for Wine Technology; the R.H. Martin Memorial Prize for Sensory Evaluation, and; the David Bradley Memorial Prize. Hehas extensive winemaking experience in Australia and overseas, including:
• Five years as an Assistant Winemaker and Winery Manager for Primo Estate Joseph Wines
• One vintage for Mountadam Vineyard
• Five months at Chateau Guiraud in Sauternes
• Five months winemaking with the Vietti family in Barolo, Italy
• Two months winemaking with Antinori in Tuscany, Italy
Peter also maintained and developed his practical winemaking and vineyard management skills by establishing a business to produce small quantities wines from the Nebbiolo grape variety. The insights gained through establishing and operating a vineyard, making the wines and managing a small wine business, represent invaluable experience which can be drawn on in Peter’s industry engagement role at the AWRI.
Peter also has extensive experience as a wine educator and wine show judge, and has held a number of industry positions including Vice President of the Australian Society of Viticulture and Oenology (ASVO), and is an Ex-Officio Councillor of the Royal Agricultural and Horticultural Society of South Australia, wine division.
