Know your clone with greater confidence
Clone misidentification can be difficult to detect and may only become apparent years after planting, when a block delivers unexpected performance, yield or wine characteristics.
The Clonal ID Service is a world-first service developed by the Australian Wine Research Institute (AWRI) and delivered through Affinity Labs to provide greater confidence in grapevine clonal identity.
Using whole-genome sequencing and advanced bioinformatics, the service identifies the most likely clonal match against a reference database of known grapevine clones, helping you make more informed decisions about the material you are planting, propagating and managing.
The service can support clonal identification at key decision points, including:
- sourcing or verifying planting material
- checking existing vineyard material
- investigating unexpected vineyard variability
- validating trial, nursery or propagation material.
The service is initially available for Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Riesling, with additional varieties to follow.

The research underpinning the Grapevine Clonal ID Service and the service validation was supported by Wine Australia, with levies from Australia’s grape and wine industry and matching funds from the Australian Government. The grapevine genome sequencing was supported by Bioplatforms Australia.
