Vine balance: what it is, what it does and how to measure it

Vine balance, the relationship between shoot vigour and crop load, is central to the production of wine grapes. If the crop load is too high, relative to the canopy size, the fruit may not ripen; too low and maturation is accelerated. But how can we measure it during the season? How does vine balance affect fruit composition?

This half day workshop aims to answer these questions, providing tools to assess vine balance and knowledge to aid growers in manipulating the canopy/yield/fruit composition relationship.

  • Exploring what we mean by vine balance and the role it plays in determining fruit composition.
  • Tasting of wines from vine balance trials.
  • Practical use of vine balance and new ways to measure it.

Booking is essential.  Free to attend and includes morning tea.
