What is the Grapevine clonal ID service?
This novel service provides accurate identification of grapevine clones using advanced genomic analysis, giving you certainty where visual checks or paperwork may fall short.
Developed by the AWRI, the service enables testing and confirmation of clone identification at key decision points: before planting, when sourcing material, or when reviewing vineyard performance.
How does it work?
High-resolution DNA analysis is performed on grapevine samples and interpreted using advanced bioinformatics. This delivers accurate clonal identification against a verified reference database. Customers will receive a report showing the most likely clonal match.
Why is a DNA-based tool a better option?
Clone misidentification is a recognised risk in viticulture, but it often goes unnoticed until vine or wine performance flags a problem. Planting mistakes can take years to uncover, often only showing up when a block underperforms or delivers unexpected wine style, yield or disease response.
Until now, clonal ID has relied on methods that are prone to error, such as ampelography, anecdotes, or old paperwork. A DNA-based tool can verify clone identity with confidence, enabling more effective planning and troubleshooting, and enhancing production alignment with your market.
Who can use it?
- Wine businesses sourcing or verifying planting material
- Nurseries looking to back up clone claims
- Growers investigating block variation or underperformance
- Viticulturalists and researchers validating trial blocks
- Vine improvement groups confirming the identity and integrity of propagation material
